Roman Warfare (9780304362653)

When Alexander the Great carved out his empire, Rome was just one of many city states on the Italian peninsula. Yet it conquered its neighbours one-by-one, defeated Carthage and eventually overwhelmed the Greek successor states too. As its republican institutions gave way to Imperial rule by Augustus and his heirs, the Roman Empire extended from the French Atlantic coast to Syria. Later conquests included Britain and much of modern Romania. How did Rome overcome opponent after opponent? What was the grand strategy of the Roman Empire? Adrian Goldsworthy reveals why Rome developed the most professional fighting force of the ancient world and what it was like to be a soldier in the legions.

A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush (9780007367757)

A classic of travel writing, 'A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush' is Eric Newby's iconic account of his journey through one of the most remote and beautiful wildernesses on earth.

It was 1956, and Eric Newby was earning an improbable living in the chaotic family business of London haute couture. Pining for adventure, Newby sent his friend Hugh Carless the now-famous cable - CAN YOU TRAVEL NURISTAN JUNE? - setting in motion a legendary journey from Mayfair to Afghanistan, and the mountains of the Hindu Kush, north-east of Kabul. Inexperienced and ill prepared (their preparations involved nothing more than some tips from a Welsh waitress), the amateurish rogues embark on a month of adventure and hardship in one of the most beautiful wildernesses on earth - a journey that adventurers with more experience and sense may never have undertaken. With good humour, sharp wit and keen observation, the charming narrative style of 'A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush' would soon crystallise Newby's reputation as one of the greatest travel writers of all time.

One of the greatest travel classics from one of Britain's best-loved travel writers, this edition includes new photographs, an epilogue from Newby's travelling companion, Hugh Carless, and a prologue from one of Newby's greatest proponents, Evelyn Waugh.

Winning Not Fighting : Why you need to rethink success and how you achieve it with the Ancient Art of Wing Tsun (9780241318379)

FT BOOK OF THE MONTH

'A wondrous book' - Alain de Botton

'A wholly new perspective to finding balance and success' - Nir Eyal

Smash your targets * Annihilate the competition * Choose your battles

Have you ever wondered why we use metaphors derived from war and conflict so often at work? What impact does that have on how we conduct business, our culture, our stress levels and ultimately our ability to succeed?

For too long war has cast a spell on how we think about business, with negative implications for us, the companies we work in and on the planet. Drawing on the philosophy of Wing Tsun, an ancient Chinese martial art based on the idea that fighting is fundamentally bad, John Vincent and Julian Hitch challenge some of our deepest-held assumptions and show us how to unlearn many ideas and behaviours that are preventing our personal and professional growth. Instead of embracing force as the long accepted route to success, Winning Not Fighting offers as a transformational guide to work and life by inspiring positivity, simplicity and focus.

"Unites business and martial arts in a realistic, practical and intelligent way. It's capitalism, but not as we know it." - Benjamin Zephaniah

The Places in Between (9780156031561)

In January 2002 Rory Stewart walked across Afghanistan-surviving by his wits, his knowledge of Persian dialects and Muslim customs, and the kindness of strangers. By day he passed through mountains covered in nine feet of snow, hamlets burned and emptied by the Taliban, and communities thriving amid the remains of medieval civilizations. By night he slept on villagers' floors, shared their meals, and listened to their stories of the recent and ancient past. Along the way Stewart met heroes and rogues, tribal elders and teenage soldiers, Taliban commanders and foreign-aid workers. He was also adopted by an unexpected companion-a retired fighting mastiff he named Babur in honor of Afghanistan's first Mughal emperor, in whose footsteps the pair was following. Through these encounters-by turns touching, con-founding, surprising, and funny-Stewart makes tangible the forces of tradition, ideology, and allegiance that shape life in the map's countless places in between.

The Economics of Contract Choice : An Agrarian Perspective (9780198283782)

The book examines the nature of agrarian contracts which have long fascinated economists. Agricultural land tenancy and farm labour contracts are the basic institutions binding the life and work of billions of peasants in the Third World. Issues of efficiency and equity associated with a particular form of contract such as sharecropping are not merely of academic interest, but have critical bearing on the reform of land tenure, and credit and marketing institutions in poor agrararian economies. In the past, there have been major theoretical controversies surrounding the role of sharecropping and other land tenure forms in agriculture and rural development. Much confusion has stemmed from partial treatments of land and labour contracts separately. Through a comprehensive critical survey of the existing literature, this book indicates a way forward towards a general theory of agrarian contracts by integrating land and labour contracts as close substitutes along a single spectrum of contract choice. The theoretical developments are matched by a wealth of empirical data.
Insights gained from the scrutiny of agrarian contracts are also of relevant to industrial organization and management in modern urban economies.
